Do not treat “heading back” as a single step. For a Key West port day, think of the return in this order:
1. Finish the final attraction
Your sightseeing should end before the ship-return portion of the itinerary begins.
If the day has fallen behind schedule, remove the final optional stop instead of using the return buffer to finish it.
2. Return your rental, if you have one
If you rented a bicycle, golf cart or scooter, returning it is its own part of the itinerary.
Allow for:
- getting back to the rental location;
- parking or locking where required;
- completing the return or handover;
- any final rental instructions.
Returning a rental is not the same as returning to the ship.
Do not plan the rental return for the moment you need to be back at Pier B.
3. Get back to Pier B
Once the rental is returned—or once you finish the final stop if you are walking—continue back toward the ship.
Keep this travel portion separate from the extra margin below.
4. Preserve the extra ship buffer
The final margin exists for the unexpected:
- a stop takes longer;
- the walk back is slower;
- traffic delays your return;
- rental handover takes longer than expected;
- your group needs extra time.
Do not spend this buffer simply because the rest of the day went smoothly.
Your cruise line's stated all-aboard instructions always take priority over KeyWestAshore's estimates or itinerary suggestions.
Walking day?
Your return is simpler:
- FINISH SIGHTSEEING
- HEAD TOWARD PIER B
- PRESERVE SHIP BUFFER
Rental day?
Add another stage:
- FINISH SIGHTSEEING
- RETURN RENTAL
- TRAVEL BACK TO PIER B
- PRESERVE SHIP BUFFER
That extra step is why a rental-based day requires slightly more return planning.
If the itinerary starts running late
Remove sightseeing.
Do not remove:
- necessary rental-return time;
- travel back to Pier B;
- the final ship buffer.
That rule applies to every KeyWestAshore itinerary.
WORK BACKWARD FROM ALL-ABOARD
Use the allowance for your plan
Leave your final activity by all-aboard minus both blocks. These are starting allowances; increase them for your group and the day’s conditions. The short and first-time plans use a walking baseline. If you add a rental, allow for its pickup and return by shortening sightseeing and beginning the return earlier, while keeping the ship buffer.

The clock example below uses the four-hour walking plan. Your ship’s instructions take priority over every estimate here.
DOWNTOWN / OLD TOWN
Start here. Find your bearings.
- Pier B · starting point on the west waterfront
- Mallory Square & Historic Seaport · northern Old Town
- Whitehead & Duval · museum and Old Town corridors
- Little White House · 111 Front Street
- Hemingway Home · 907 Whitehead Street
- Fort Zachary Taylor · signed Southard approach
Use all-aboard, not departure
Record the deadline and time standard supplied by your cruise line. Ask staff if your phone and the ship’s clock disagree. Follow any earlier reporting time, security requirement or instruction the ship gives you.
Separate the return journey from the buffer
Our short walking plans reserve 45 minutes beyond the estimated return walk; longer and rental plans reserve 60. These are editorial starting points, not cruise-line rules. Increase them for queues, mobility needs, rental handover, weather or uncertain transport.
A simple worked example
Suppose all-aboard is 4:00 pm. The four-hour walking plan reserves 30 minutes to return and 45 extra minutes, so leave the final stop by 2:45 pm and aim to reach Pier B by 3:15 pm. Continue through access and boarding promptly. This example is not a ship schedule; use your crew’s instructions.
Once you reach the waterfront
Follow signs and crew instructions to the correct cruise entrance. Being near the ship is not the same as being aboard. KeyWestAshore provides planning guidance; it does not guarantee transport, access or boarding.
