7+ hours · history, a park and a good lunch

The island, at your own pace.

Give one museum and one outdoor stop room to breathe. You have more time, but you still do not need to do everything.

With 7+ hours, wheels become optional—not necessary

A long port call gives you enough time for a fuller Key West day without automatically needing transportation.

If your priorities remain concentrated around Old Town, the waterfront, meals and attractions along a coherent route, staying on foot keeps the day simple.

You gain more time at the places themselves instead of introducing rental pickup, parking, locking or return.

But if you want to spread the day farther across Key West, transportation can materially expand the realistic range.

Walking-first plan. The timings and map below describe the walking route. If you choose wheels, confirm the legal route and allow for pickup, parking or locking, handover and the final walk to Pier B. Fit that time by shortening optional sightseeing and starting the return earlier where needed; never reduce the ship buffer.

A good fit for: Visitors comfortable with a longer walk, or willing to arrange an earlier taxi transfer.

Plan for roughly 3–4 miles with the signed park approach, grounds and pier access. This is the most demanding walking day; shorten it if heat, uneven surfaces or your group’s pace makes it uncomfortable.

Numbered markers locate sourced premises or activity areas, not verified entrances or parking. Sequence lines join street/square references and do not establish turn-by-turn, cycling or legal driving directions. Follow current signs and the operator’s legal route. The Fort line ends at a Howard England Way road junction; its numbered marker shows the fort area, not an entrance or beach access. The Pier B origin dot identifies the approximate dock area, not a verified cruise gate or pedestrian exit. Follow your assigned crew-directed access. The dashed box locates the enlarged detail. YOUR DAY, STEP BY STEP

Approximate planning allocations · adjust for conditions

Activity numbers match the map; arrows mark travel.

  1. PIER B / START 0 min–15 min after leaving Pier B / 15 min

    Get oriented

Set your all-aboard reminder using the ship’s clock, save the crew-assigned cruise entrance and ship contact details, and begin the seven-hour window only when actually ready to leave Pier B. A long published port call does not guarantee seven usable hours ashore.

  2. TRAVEL 15 min–45 min after leaving Pier B / 30 min

Walk Whitehead to the Hemingway Home

Reach Front and Whitehead from the assigned public exit, then walk south toward Hemingway Home, 907 Whitehead Street. Notice Old Town homes and street architecture without treating private gardens as public attractions. The 30-minute allocation includes crossings and shade breaks; follow current construction and event signs.

  3. 01

    STOP 45 min–1h 45m after leaving Pier B / 60 min

    Choose one museum visit

Make Hemingway Home the literary-history anchor: the furnished home, studio connection, pool/grounds and resident cats are reasons for a proper visit rather than just a gate photograph. Main-gate tickets include the museum’s stated 20–30-minute guided tour; no reservations are required. This 60-minute stop also contains entry, waiting and gardens, and does not guarantee the next tour. If it will not fit—or the group does not want paid admission—skip the museum and continue the existing route, keeping the recovered time as rest or earlier return. Do not add a second museum.

  4. TRAVEL 1h 45m–2h 30m after leaving Pier B / 45 min

Walk via Southard to the park

Walk north on Whitehead to Southard, then west through Truman Annex. At the end of Southard follow the signed public park approach toward Howard England Way, visitor address 601 Howard England Way. This deliberate backtrack reaches the published entrance; do not cut across restricted waterfront or Navy property. Admission is paid and the 45-minute allocation includes the approach and entry. Check current park alerts; if closed or the walk is already too much, omit the park and keep the Old Town portion instead.

  5. 02

    STOP 2h 30m–3h 45m after leaving Pier B / 75 min

    Take a proper park break

Choose the historic fort’s cannon, brick passageways and interpretation, or a shoreline/picnic break, as the focus of these 75 minutes. Do not assume a full fort visit plus a long swim. The sand-and-pebble beach, picnic tables, toilets, showers and refill facilities make a practical outdoor rest, subject to current availability and swimming conditions. Walking inside the park, changing and getting back to the exit all use this same slot. Shade and seating may be occupied. If heat or access makes it unsuitable, leave early rather than seeking a farther beach.

  6. TRAVEL 3h 45m–4h 25m after leaving Pier B / 40 min

Return to Old Town on public streets

Retrace the signed park approach toward Southard and Old Town on public streets, then head toward northern Duval for lunch. Start earlier if the walk into the park took longer than its allocation. The 40-minute return-to-town slot does not certify an accessible route or permit a shortcut across restricted land.

  7. 03

    BREAK / FINAL ACTIVITY 4h 25m–5h 25m after leaving Pier B / 60 min

A late lunch and a small wander

Use the existing northern Old Town finish for lunch and a small wander, not another attraction. Cuban Coffee Queen at Clinton Square, 291 Front Street #6, is a named option with dine-in and air-conditioning listed by its operator. Ask about the queue and keep service, eating and browsing inside these 60 minutes. If it is busy, choose simple food in the same area or begin the final return sooner. Stay around Duval, Greene and the north waterfront; a Seaport excursion, Southernmost Point detour or sunset wait is outside this plan.

  8. RETURN 5h 25m–6h / 35 min

Head back to Pier B after any rental return

Leave your last stop in northern Old Town and make for Whitehead and Front, then the crew-directed Pier B entrance. The 35-minute return allowance is separate from your 60-minute boarding buffer.

If you chose a rental, finish sightseeing, return it and complete handover before the final trip to Pier B. Returning a rental is not the same as returning to the ship. Cut sightseeing first if the day is late; preserve the final ship buffer and follow your cruise line’s instructions.

  9. BUFFER Final 60 minutes

    Keep your buffer intact

Aim to be at Pier B before this buffer starts. Allow for access, queues and boarding. Follow your cruise line’s official all-aboard instructions and any earlier reporting time.

When wheels improve the day

Consider transportation when you deliberately want to connect one or two farther-apart parts of Key West that would make the walking route inefficient.

Choose the mode based on the group:

Bicycle Good for confident riders who want additional range while keeping the day active.

Golf cart Useful for groups, visitors wanting less walking, or anyone connecting farther-apart areas.

Scooter Best for experienced riders already comfortable operating one.

The wider-range version should be a deliberate alternative—not the existing walking itinerary plus every additional stop you can fit.

Avoid unnecessary backtracking

If you know you want wheels, make the transportation decision near the beginning of the day.

Walking deep into town, doubling back to collect a rental and then heading outward again wastes some of the time the transportation was supposed to save.

Likewise, avoid bouncing repeatedly between Old Town and farther parts of the island.

Use wheels to create one coherent wider loop, not a zigzag.

Choose depth in Old Town or one coherent wider loop: Old Town plus one farther geographic area. Do not add attractions just to justify transportation.

Before you commit

A boat excursion is a different anchor activity, not an add-on to this plan. Check its total check-in-to-return duration before replacing these stops.

These are editorial time budgets, not guaranteed travel or queue times. Begin earlier or shorten the day if your pace, weather or actual rental location needs more time.
