4 hours · one classic visit, no rush to see it all
Your first Key West day.
Walk the historic streets, choose one museum and leave time for lunch. A good first visit without crossing the whole island.
Four hours gives you more flexibility—not a reason to rush
Four hours is enough for a first-time visitor to combine one meaningful attraction, lunch and a good look around Old Town.
Walking can suit this route if it fits your group’s comfort and mobility; a rental is also a legitimate choice.
A bicycle or golf cart can make the day easier if you want to reduce walking, move more quickly between parts of the route, or keep the group together.
What matters more than the transportation choice is keeping the itinerary focused.
One museum, lunch and Old Town usually makes a better four-hour first visit than trying to turn the day into a full-island tour.
Walking or wheels?
Both can work for this itinerary.
Walking keeps the day simple and works well when you are comfortable exploring Old Town at an easy pace.
A bicycle can reduce travel time between stops while keeping the day active.
A golf cart can reduce walking and give a group more flexibility without requiring the itinerary to spread across the whole island.
Choose the mode that makes the existing plan more comfortable.
Do not assume that having wheels means you need to add several more attractions.
Prefer less walking?
Walking baseline, flexible transport. The timings and map below describe the walking route. If you choose wheels, confirm the legal route and allow for pickup, parking or locking, handover and the final walk to Pier B. Fit that time by shortening optional sightseeing and starting the return earlier where needed; never reduce the ship buffer.
A good fit for: First-time visitors choosing one museum, lunch and Old Town, with walking or wheels to suit their group.
Allow roughly 2 miles with pier access, the museum grounds and browsing. Expect exposed stretches and crossings; this is an approximate planning distance.

Set your return plan
Check the official all-aboard time, ship’s clock and crew-assigned cruise entrance. The four hours begin when you are actually ready to leave Pier B, not at the advertised ship arrival. Save the entrance and ship contact details before leaving.
TRAVEL 15 min–45 min after leaving Pier B / 30 min
Walk south on Whitehead
From the signed public exit, reach Front and Whitehead, then continue south toward Hemingway Home, 907 Whitehead Street. The existing street estimate is about two-thirds of a mile; pier access adds distance. Look at the Old Town streetscape as you go, but the 30 minutes also contain crossings, navigation and any shade breaks. Follow current works/event signs rather than a map line through a barrier.

STOP 45 min–1h 45m after leaving Pier B / 60 min
Visit the Hemingway Home
Choose this paid visit for Hemingway’s furnished home, writing-studio connection, pool and grounds, with resident cats part of the setting rather than a promised encounter. Tickets are sold at the main gate; the museum says no reservations are required and its included guided tour takes about 20–30 minutes. That is not the whole-visit or queue time: entry, gardens and leaving all belong inside this 60-minute slot. If you do not want the museum or the line will consume the slot, skip admission and continue the existing Whitehead–Olivia–Duval route for street views, a calmer lunch and optional garden pause. Do not spend the saved time on another ticketed attraction.
If the museum is too busy
Do not spend a large part of a four-hour visit waiting to begin the museum.
If the queue would noticeably disrupt the itinerary, the museum is the first major stop to cut.
Continue with the Old Town portion of the route and use the recovered time for a more relaxed walk, ride or lunch.
Do not replace the museum with another ticketed attraction simply to fill the slot.
If you simply do not want a museum, take the same Old Town route without admission: Whitehead street views, Olivia to northbound Duval, a lunch/rest at the Downtown Cuban Coffee Queen (5 Key Lime Square), and the optional St. Paul’s Memorial Garden/exterior pause at 401 Duval if signs permit. Its church interior is closed for restoration. These choices use existing browse/meal time; unused museum time becomes breathing room or an earlier return.
The Little White House at 111 Front Street is the guide’s existing alternative museum. It is not a drop-in timed replacement: check its own tour updates, entry wait and full visit, and account for a different sequence before choosing it. No revised minute-by-minute itinerary is approved here.
TRAVEL 1h 45m–1h 55m after leaving Pier B / 10 min
Cross to Duval at Olivia
Return to public streets and use Olivia toward Duval, then head north. This keeps the next meal and final browse on the way toward the waterfront; do not add a Southernmost Point photo detour. Crossings and dismounting or parking, if using a rental, are still part of the day.
- 02
BREAK 1h 55m–2h 35m after leaving Pier B / 40 min
Lunch on the way back
Cuban Coffee Queen’s Downtown branch at 5 Key Lime Square, by Southard and Duval, fits this northbound route between Olivia and Fleming. Its operator lists sandwiches, dine-in and a courtyard with shade trees. Ask about the wait before sitting down: service, eating and the short approach share the 40-minute rest/meal allocation. Choose a simpler takeaway on the same route if busy; do not head south to the 1130 Duval branch or east to the Seaport branch. Seats and shade are not guaranteed.
- 03
STOP / FINAL ACTIVITY 2h 35m–2h 45m after leaving Pier B / 10 min
Finish near Duval and Fleming
Finish with a last shop or exterior photograph near Duval and Fleming. St. Paul’s Memorial Garden at 401 Duval may offer a quiet respectful pause if signs permit, but the church interior is closed for restoration; do not plan an indoor stained-glass visit. This ten-minute stop is optional. Omit it if lunch or museum entry ran long, and begin the existing return from no farther south than Fleming.
RETURN 2h 45m–3h 15m / 30 min
Head back to Pier B after any rental return
From Duval at Fleming, head north toward Greene, then west toward Whitehead and Front. Follow the marked Pier B entrance, with time for crossings and the final approach.
If you chose a rental, finish sightseeing, return it and complete handover before the final trip to Pier B. Returning a rental is not the same as returning to the ship. Cut sightseeing first if the day is late; preserve the final ship buffer and follow your cruise line’s instructions.
BUFFER Final 45 minutes
Keep your buffer intact
Aim to be at Pier B before this buffer starts. Allow for access, queues and boarding. Follow your cruise line’s official all-aboard instructions and any earlier reporting time.
When wheels help
Transportation becomes useful when it improves the existing plan rather than simply adding more stops.
A bicycle can help an active visitor move efficiently between areas.
A golf cart can be useful for groups, visitors who want less walking, or anyone who prefers having transportation available throughout the visit.
If you use wheels, keep the same basic itinerary structure and preserve the return margin.
Before you commit
Skip the Southernmost Point detour on this version. A photo queue and current street works can consume the time you wanted for lunch.
These are editorial time budgets, not guaranteed travel or queue times. Begin earlier or shorten the day if your pace, weather or actual rental location needs more time.
