3 hours of Key West highlights
A little Old Town.
Waterfront views, a taste of Duval and time for something cold. A compact first look that stays close to the pier.
Keep the three-hour plan compact
Three hours is enough for a good Key West highlights loop as long as the day stays focused.
You can comfortably approach this itinerary on foot, especially if you want the simplest version of the day.
A bicycle or golf cart can also work well if you prefer to cover the route more quickly, reduce the amount of walking, or give yourself more flexibility between stops.
The key is not to turn the extra mobility into an overloaded itinerary.
Whether you walk or use wheels, keep the route compact and protect the time you need to get back to the ship.
Walk or use wheels?
Walk if you want the simplest version of the itinerary with no pickup or return step.
Choose a bicycle if you are comfortable riding and want to move between stops faster while keeping the day flexible.
Choose a golf cart if your group values comfort, wants to reduce walking, or prefers having transportation available throughout the highlights loop.
Whatever you choose, the three-hour plan should remain a three-hour plan.
Transportation should make the route easier—not create room for several extra stops.
Walking baseline, flexible transport. The timings and map below describe the walking route. If you choose wheels, confirm the legal route and allow for pickup, parking or locking, handover and the final walk to Pier B. Fit that time by shortening optional sightseeing and starting the return earlier where needed; never reduce the ship buffer.
A good fit for: First visits, short calls and travelers who prefer fewer stops.
Allow roughly 1–1½ miles including pier access and browsing. This is a planning estimate, not a measured accessible route.

PIER B / START 0 min–15 min after leaving Pier B / 15 min
Set your return time
Check all-aboard, the ship’s clock and the crew-assigned exit and return entrance before leaving Pier B. Save a photograph of the signed cruise entrance and the ship’s contact details. Count only the time you actually have ashore—not the published arrival time. The 15 minutes here are an orientation allocation, not a guarantee of disembarkation speed.
TRAVEL 15 min–30 min after leaving Pier B / 15 min
Walk to Mallory Square
Use the open public approach indicated from your assigned exit toward Mallory Square. Do not choose a hotel reception, marina office or an unmarked waterfront shortcut as your cruise gate. Allow for crossings, crowds and barriers; the exact Pier B passenger route still needs a local check.
- 01
STOP 30 min–50 min after leaving Pier B / 20 min
Pause by the water
Look out over the harbor from the public plaza and waterfront areas that signs allow. The dock-and-warehouse setting gives a quick sense of the port without buying admission. This 20-minute daytime pause is for water views and photographs—not a promise of Sunset Celebration performers or stalls, which belong to the sunset event. Do not wait for sunset against ship instructions. If barriers, crowds or heat make the square unappealing, shorten the stop and continue to the existing Duval portion.
TRAVEL 50 min–1h after leaving Pier B / 10 min
Reach the upper end of Duval
Make for Duval at Greene Street using signed public streets. “Upper Duval” here means the north end near the waterfront. Look for storefronts and street architecture rather than trying to walk the entire length of Duval. Check the city’s current works and event closures; no fixed pedestrian diversion is promised.
- 02
STOP 1h–1h 35m after leaving Pier B / 35 min
Browse a few Old Town blocks
Browse only the blocks between Greene and Fleming, choosing a few shops or exterior views instead of trying to see every storefront. St. Paul’s at 401 Duval is a possible respectful Memorial Garden/exterior pause if access signs permit; its church interior is currently closed for restoration, so do not expect stained-glass viewing. Turn around by Fleming, or sooner for heat or tired feet. If late, shorten this flexible 35-minute browse first; do not extend it south to the Southernmost Point.
- 03
BREAK / FINAL ACTIVITY 1h 35m–1h 55m after leaving Pier B / 20 min
A cold drink or key lime treat
For a named key lime stop, Kermit’s lists a shop at 335F Duval Street along this northern Duval browse. Choose a slice or pie bar only if the queue fits the 20-minute snack allocation, then continue toward Greene for the return. Do not detour east to its Elizabeth Street shop or count on a seat, stock or a short line. If it is busy or closed, take a simple drink/snack on the same northbound route rather than waiting away the ship margin.
RETURN 1h 55m–2h 15m / 20 min
Know when the sightseeing portion is finished
From the north end of Duval, use Greene and Whitehead toward Front Street, then follow the signed cruise approach to your Pier B entrance. Start sooner if you have wandered farther south.
When this itinerary reaches its planned turn-back point, begin the return portion of the day.
If an earlier stop takes longer than expected, remove something later rather than allowing sightseeing to spill into your return margin.
If you rented something, remember that returning the rental happens before the final return to Pier B.
Your cruise line's instructions remain the controlling deadline.
BUFFER Final 45 minutes
Keep your buffer intact
Aim to be at Pier B before this buffer starts. Allow for access, queues and boarding. Follow your cruise line’s official all-aboard instructions and any earlier reporting time.
If you get ashore later than expected
Do not try to recover lost time by using your ship-return buffer.
Cut the itinerary instead.
First cut: remove the final optional stop or flexible detour.
Next cut: shorten unstructured browsing time.
Keep the core route intact and begin the return portion of the day at the planned point.
Don't let faster transportation make the itinerary too ambitious
A bicycle or golf cart can shorten some movement between stops, but that does not make your return buffer available for sightseeing.
Avoid using the extra mobility to bolt several farther-away attractions onto this itinerary.
If you want a broader Key West day, move to one of the longer itineraries instead.
Before you commit
Museum admission, a beach trip and a long restaurant meal will crowd this short day. Pick the waterfront and let that be enough. The existing walk remains a valid choice; if you choose a rental, collection, parking and return must fit by cutting optional browsing or snack time—not the ship buffer.
These are editorial time budgets, not guaranteed travel or queue times. Begin earlier or shorten the day if your pace, weather or actual rental location needs more time.
